Class Comics JAM POSTER – by Jacob Mott!

Good morning my friends…

Today I want to talk to you about this AMAZING new Jam Poster that Jacob Mott created for us here at Class Comics.  It’s absolutely stunning!  I have one hanging in my studio, and it’s all I can do to peel my eyes away from it long enough to get any work done! HA! HA! HA!

As you know, Jacob Mott is the artist drawing the new NAKED JUSTICE: Beginnings series (look for issue #1 to be out in early 2009!).  I love Jacob’s take on NJ and naturally was burning to see how he would draw most of my other Boytoons.  Jacob was happy to oblige and a few short days later, I received this incredible illustration from him.

It features 18 of my Boytoons, including the 4 heavy-hitters: Zahn, Naked Justice, Cam and Deimos! Plus it introduces you to 4 brand new characters from the NJ Beginnings series.  Horsefly, Glow Worm, Trip and the Size King are all part of the Unrivaled Alliance and as you can see, they are hot, hot, HOT!

So I’m encouraging you all to check this print out! It’s available in 2 sizes, 13 X 19 and 8.5 X 11.  It’s glossy, it’s gorgeous, and it’s a piece of Gay Pop Culture Art!  Plus, it’s LIMITED!  So you’ll wanna get yours while ya can!

I dunno about you, but this just whets my appetite for NJ’s new series.

More from me shortly, my friends. Hugz + kisses to you all!

Rapture #3 available for pre-order!

Hey Folks…

Just to let you know, you can now head on over to your favorite local comic shop and pre-order Rapture #3.  This is a BIG issue in every sense of the word.  It has lots of important stuff going on it in.  It features THE Ghostboy/Ghostgirl story — will GB get his male body back?  This is the issue where you find out! “Walk in my shoes” was written by yours truly and illustrated by Eric Mars.

There’s also a brand new Deimos story called “The Coin” that I wrote and that Spubba the Mad illustrated.  And I’ve drawn the second part of “The Great Satyr-Caper” which holds a few surprises for Space Cadet, and some pretty important hints as to the true nature of the Guardians of the Cube.  DON’T MISS IT!  You’ll never forgive yourselves!  LOL! ;)

Pre-order Rapture #3 (Diamond Previews Adult code NOV083902) directly from your local comic book shop.

Hotcha Does Locus!

Hiya guys…

My pal Hotcha has done it again.  This time, he’s drawn Locus taking it up the arse for the first time the way he did in Rapture #2.  That would be Captain Jung and Disco double dipping our favorite lean, green sex machine!  I just love this latest image!  Hotcha is truly talented and nails my guys (no pun intended, I swear!!!) every time he draws them!  I encourage you all to check out his gallery! He’s drawn some extremely sexy stuff.

And if you’re just tuning in, check out his rendition of Zahn getting some much needed attention from Drake, Hotcha’s very own tattood creation!

Thanks for this latest image, Hotcha! As I’ve said before, you rock my friend! Feel free to draw my Boytoons ANYTIME! As for this yummy illustration, I think it really does go to show that though it may not be easy being green, it can definitely be a lot of fun! LOL! ;)

BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #142 – Advertising Class!

I just finished putting together an advertisement for the next Diamond Previews Adult catalog.  This ad was for my upcoming Striptease book (by the way, I’ll chat more about Striptease very soon!).  I was quite pleased with it and it occurred to me that I’ve never really talked about the advertising side of things with you guys.

It’s funny you know – I love to design.  That isn’t to say I think I’m any good at it, but I approach every piece with a lot of enthusiasm.  Graphic Design and creating advertisements can be a blast and a great way to take a break from my drawing, but it can also be very stressful!

You can’t help but feel the pressure, because each piece you do has a lot riding on it.  After all, you are trying to sell the product you’re advertising, and hopefully entice bookstores and readers to invest in that product.

Each ad we put together at Class Comics begins with the whole team sitting down and coming up with ideas – brainstorming!  What do we want to say?  What do we want to show?  What don’t we want to show and keep a surprise for the readers?

We have to keep in mind what publication we are creating the ad for.  What are its dimensions and specs, and just as importantly, what are its criteria.  Though some publications are aimed at adult readers, like the Diamond Previews Adult Catalog for example, there is still a strict “no penis” policy.  So each ad for Diamond needs to be approached very carefully.  We constantly have to find creative new ways to hide our Boytoons’ bits, but still arouse interest.

Covers for the Previews Adult catalog are always such a pleasure, but sometimes need to be turned around on tight deadlines, so there is rarely time to create brand new artwork for them.  For this latest one advertising Rapture #3, I had to resort to older images that could still promote the book, even if they did not feel all that new to me.  But on some covers, like the one advertising Brother to Dragons, I’m lucky enough to get awesome new artwork from the series’ artist, just in time to compose the piece.  In this case, Carlos García was sweet enough to work under the most impossible deadline and whip up these 2 gorgeous illustrations of Alai and Jiki!

Recently I had to create an ad for the Program of the HX Gay Erotic Expo held in New York.  That was SUCH a blast.  Their instructions to us: “Make it as explicit as you like”! WAH-HOO!  Rarely do I get to haul out the big guns.  It felt so nice to have the opportunity to put something together that did not hide any part of our Boytoons.  It was tricky choosing the illustrations that went into the piece, but in the end, I think I got a fun cross-section of our books. Here we opted to let the images speak for themselves, using only a minimal amount of text.

In-house advertising, basically the ads we use on the Class Comics family of Blogs and Websites are obviously less restrictive about content.  I can show as much penis as I want, but no matter what the purpose of an ad, I always try to abide by the following 3 rules…

1. Never lie!  Don’t make bullshit up to sell a product.  It’s perfectly fine to extol the virtues of a product, and the spin you give things is super important, but you’ll just piss off your readers if you promise stuff that isn’t part of the actual product!

2. Less is more!  Don’t give everything away.  People like to know what to expect from a book, but only to a degree!  You want people to get excited about what you’re advertising, but you also don’t want to spoil the fun of actually reading the book!  You want to give them the opportunity to be surprised and discover stuff too!

3. Give it everything you’ve got! And by that I mean, get as creative as you can.  I swear, it makes a difference how invested you get in your advertising pieces.  If it’s worth doing, its well worth doing right, and your fans and readers will appreciate that you hold them in high enough regard to give them the best teasers you possibly can!

Anyhoo, dear friends… I hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour of my advertising portfolio and my impressions of advertising and graphic design in general.  I’ll see you all again very soon!

Hugz + Kisses,
Patrick XOXO

A renewed sense of hope!

Good morning my friends…

And what a great morning to it is!  You know me, I rarely get political, but I have to tell you how thrilled both Fraser and I are that Barack Obama made history and won the US Presidential Election yesterday by a whopping landslide.  Okay, so he gets sworn in in January, but in our minds and the minds of millions of people, he is now PRESIDENT OBAMA.  It’s amazing!  The first African American president of the United States!!! WOW!!!  I have been so giddy all night, I hardly slept!

Move over Darth Bush!  Your time is up!

Obama’s victory speech was so eloquent and so moving.  I doubt I was the only one who got all tingly at hearing him include Gay people in his speech.  We are significant people, and to be recognized as such along with everyone else by Obama was truly monumental.  With all of this Prop 8 garbage, to be counted and respected as fellow “human beings” by the future leader of the United States is a huge, despite the early results of prop 8.

The preliminary results look bad for Prop 8 , but please remember not to give up and to keep fighting for what we all know if right.  We won a tremendous victory yesterday, but there are plenty of other victories that need to be won now.

Despite this, I have renewed faith in the Human Race, and for the first time in a long, long time, I have real hope that our world really can change for the better.  There’s still a whack load of hard work and tough times ahead, but at least there now seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel.

My sincere thanks to everyone who supported President Obama in his campaign and who voted yesterday!  Much love to you all, and a huge congrats to all my American friends.  Congrats to us all really, ‘cause this is a victory we can all be proud of!

Now if only our own election had gone as well here in Canada… Next time, baby!  Next time!

Hugz + kisses,
Patrick XOXO

BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #141 – Anti-Heroes #3 is here!

I was thrilled to get a very special package in my mailbox the other day — A gorgeous, shiny new copy of JC Etheredge’s Anti-Heroes #3.  I was so excited because this was something I had long been looking forward to.

Anti-Heroes #3 was an absolute blast.  The art is some of the best JC has produced for the series so far and the writing is extremely entertaining.  This third issue has all the humor you might expect, but it also offers a very cool look at Caleb’s past.  And beware the Bomb Squad!!  The Villains of the issue turn out to have some very interesting ties and shall we say, effects on our 3 beloved Anti-Heroes.  Wrapped up in a very slick and THICK, gorgeously printed book complete with some awesome 3D pages and 3D glasses, this book is a crown jewel in my collection of male erotic comics.

I fired a few questions JC’s way the moment I finished reading issue #3. Figured we’d all enjoy a little one on one with the mastermind behind the Anti-Heroes. And be sure to rush on over to the Anti-Heroes website and get your very own copy of Anti-Heroes #3… and heck, if you haven’t done so yet, why not grab issues #1 and #2!

BOYTOONS MAGAZINE: Anti-Heroes #3 has just come out, and having just read it, I can honestly say it was my favorite issue from the series so far.  Your art is gorgeous, sexy and fun, and the printing of the book is superb.  It also seems to me that issue #3 has more penis actual sex content (and I am SOOOOOO not complaining!) than #1 and #2.  What prompted you to include more naughtiness and do you see that escalating even further in future issues?

JC ETHEREDGE:
Thanks, it’s my favorite one as well. It was so long in the making that I made for SURE it was going to be best yet. At first, book 3 had limited nudity, as in my first 2 issues. But that just wasn’t doing anything for me. It wasn’t sexy enough. So, I thought back to why I covered up the characters more in the first 2 issues and the only reason I could remember was that I was just simply embarrassed to show full-frontal in a published work. I’ve since gotten over that hang-up and basically realized I really need to embrace what my work is known for.

The other reason I decided to go more porny is kinda you, Patrick! (haha) Or more specifically, the sudden boom in gay erotic art. I’m noticing more and more extremely talented artists working in our genre, producing some really great raunchy work. By not showing so much nudity, I began thinking that I was kinda falling behind the curve. So I went back and redrew a lot of book 3, making it more sexy… i.e. adding more dong!

BTM: We learn a lot about Caleb in this issue, which is very cool, and without giving too much away, I think it’s safe to say that a good deal of his past is revealed.  The issue also focuses on him a great deal. Was it tricky finding a balance between the humor, the sexiness and the substance of the story, especially where exposition is concerned, or do you find that as a writer, you are able to blend all of this stuff without much effort?

JC: Yep, this is the Caleb ish. It’s important for me to reveal major elements of a character’s past early on. It helps me get a real grasp on the character. I know you’ve heard this before, but the characters seem to write themselves. Once I have a vague idea of what I want to happen, interactions and dialogue come really easy. For the most part, the humor comes naturally too. Every once in a while, I’ll ask my partner– “hey think of a joke for such and such situation.” We have a similar sense of humor so most of the time he’s right on the mark with his suggestions. He’s the one who came up with all the jokes around Binky, the helper monkey. As far as the porniness– yeah, I have to admit, it’s a bit of a process coming up with reasons to have these guys exposed so often!

BTM: Does one particular Anti-Hero come more naturally to you?  Is it easier to write one over the others… I guess what I am asking is, do you find you favor any 1 Anti-Hero more than the others?  Why?

JC: Zeke’s the one I’ve drawn the longest and is thusly my favorite.  But he is also the one who is most challenging to write. Because of what I want to do with his past (which I want to reveal in #4,) he is full of contradictions. So sometimes the most obvious approach with him isn’t want I end up going with. Tai and Caleb come a little easier because I end up calling on two basic sides of my own personality.

Tai’s the immature kid in me while Caleb’s the rational adult. As a unit, the Anti-Heroes’ general attitude toward things is really like mine. They say and do the things I wish I could!

BTM: The format of this book is radically different from the first 2 issues?  It looks fabulous and very slick.  What prompted you to make this change in format?  And what made you decide to include some 3D pages in the book?

JC: All hastily planned after-thoughts! haha! Redrawing the book, doubling the number of Splash Pages, and adding a few 3D Splash Pages made my page count a little higher than the first two issues. I kinda forced myself to go with perfect-binding. It put a hurting on my wallet, but I couldn’t accept anything else. Saddle-Stitching would have worked but the thickness of the pages would have made the book buckle into itself too much.

The 3D idea came from some good friends of mine, all artists. One does traditional illustration and design and it was actually her idea. Both of our spouses work in CG and knew what was needed to make flat 2D images work with the anaglyphic 3D glasses. Basically, they took my flat art and rebuilt it in Maya (a CG modeling / animation program.) Then they rendered it out for anaglyphic 3D. Of course, I had to go in and tweak the final images in Photoshop but that was nothing compared to the initial effort they put into it. I’m very grateful to have awesome, intelligent, artistic friends!

BTM: You color your own stuff beautifully, but for this issue, you called upon Silvano to do the colors, which he did remarkably well.  What was that like for you?  Did you enjoy working with a colorist, and how did the process flow?

JC: Silvano is an amazing artist whose own erotic artwork should be coming our way very soon! I am totally in awe of his stuff and am a little self-conscious to have him coloring my drawings. But he has absolutely no ego about how good he is, and just works like the professional he is.

What amazes me about this guy is the speed at which he works. He turned out the entire book in less than 2 weeks! He also sees eye-to- eye with me when I describe what I want, so I never have to ask him to redo anything. I’ll say this, working with him was easily the most pleasant aspect of getting this book out. Almost everyone else I’ve had to deal with has caused me so much stress that there have been times when I just wanted to give up. So it’s refreshing to work with a real professional.

BTM: I absolutely adored Anti-Heroes #3, but I was sad when I got to the end because, being the greedy little fan-boy I am, I wanted more!  LOL!  Can we expect an Anti-Heroes #4 soon, and if so, what sort of things can we look forward to happening in it?

JC: Aw– haha! Dude, if I could, I’d have #4 in your hands right now!  But I don’t wanna say when I’ll have it done, because I’ll not have it in time. With 4, I want to reveal Zeke’s past as well as culminate what I’ve been setting up with the recurring side characters (Cassio, Toni, Bug.) Cassio and Zeke will have a rematch and the rest of the Anti-Heroes will deal with Bug and Toni. I’m still working on the script, but what’s definitely set in stone is that Zeke has a hitherto unrevealed stronger form much like “Super Semen” Tai and “Power Suit Caleb.” I can’t tell you what that form will look like, but if you think about it, I feel like it might be kinda obvious.

BTM: Are there any other projects of yours we should be on the lookout for?

JC: I’m working on putting Phase 2 of my websoap, Persuasions online and also still tinkering with Omega Phi, which I want to be another printed book, but not in the traditional comic-style format. Both of those series’ have a definite foreseeable END in my mind, unlike Anti- Heroes, which I want to do indefinitely. I’m almost sold-out of issues 1 & 2 and figure once that happens, I’ll offer them as downloadable content on my website. I know there’s a lot of folks who prefer online media, so they’ll be pleased to hear that. In the meantime, stay tuned to my blog and anti-heroes.net for more individual pieces and updates!

BTM: Thanks so much for taking the time to chat, JC!  I really appreciate your time, and am always looking forward to your latest projects!

JC: And thanks so much for giving me another cover story, Patrick! You know better than anyone what an influence and inspiration you’ve been to me! Long live Boytoons!

Jin Saotome – Thank you Blodiax!!!

Good morning dear friends…

I hope you all had a great Halloween and are now happily gorged on tasty treats!  LOL!  Today, I have posted an illustration (well 2 versions of it actually) of the CAPCOM character called Jin Saotome.  I did this illustration as thanks to Blodiax who animated 3 of my drawings.  You can see all 3 of those animations on the Class Comics website.

Blodiax did a fantastic job with Camili-Cat, Zahn and Naked Justice!  He’s a HUGE fan of Jin, and I can totally see why after drawing the character for the very first time myself.  LOL!

So enjoy everyone, and check out Blodiax’s other animations and collaborations in his Gallery!

More from me very soon!

BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #140 – The Halloween Issue!

I love Halloween!  I love it as much as I love Christmas, and that is saying a lot!  I thought it would be fun to do a special Halloween issue this year, counting down my personal 10 recent fave Halloween treats.  And to celebrate the occasion, I thought I would draw a cover Boytoon that seems to scare a whole lot of you! Behold Stephane riding his Jack O Lantern! What you all have against clowns, I’ll never know!  LOL!

So without further delay, here are my fabulously scary top 10 Halloween Treats of 2008!

#1…Undead!
Written and Directed by the very crafty Spierig brothers, this is one of those low budget films that manages to look like a multi-million dollar budget flick.  This movie is so fun and so slick, you forget you’re watching something that cost about $1.50 to make.  In the tongue-in-cheek spirit of The Evil Dead and Dead Alive, Undead maintains the gore-drenched zombie horror tradition as five survivors take shelter in an isolated farmhouse to battle their way through a plague of walking dead.  It’s original and gives the Zombie genre a whole new twist that I just adored! That’s why this little beauty is my #1 Halloween treat of 2008!

#2… Jack Brooks Monster Slayer

What if Buffy had been a boy — A sexy, redneck boy with a real bad attitude and a great set of abs (well, at least on the DVD cover!)?  That’s essentially what this bizarre yet hilariously gory Horroromidy is all about.  And with Robert Englund chewing up the scenery, this one is headed straight for Cult Movie Status! Tentacle porn anyone?

#3… The Monster Trilogy
Okay, so I didn’t care for the second book as much as the first and third, but man o man, can David Wellington ever write a scary trilogy!  His Zombie saga is terribly engrossing and keeps you holding your breath!  Monster Island sees New York become a graveyard of voracious yet frighteningly smart zombies.  Monster Nation, though very cool in its own way, has a lot of military stuff in it (which I seldom like!).  Monster Planet makes you want to sleep with the lights on!  Fantastic reading!

#4… Crossed
Published by Avatar Press, this is one freaky comicbook!  Of course it is, it’s written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Jacen Burrows.  It’s the bloody end of the world alright, and the “infected” or whatever the fuck they are like to rip you apart and then do things to your body part!  Seriously nasty – and seriously addictive! Though be warned, this little blood fest is NOT for the feint of heart!

#5… UGLYDOLLS

Because not everything Halloween has to be about Zombies, blood and mischief, the UGLYDOLLS are the coolest stuffed thing-a-majigs to hit the shelves in a long, long time. Uglydolls are plush, lovable characters that show us that being UGLY means accepting our differences and embracing our flaws. They’re so ugly, they’re adorable.  They come in several different sizes and there are a ton of characters to choose from!

#6… Day of The Dead

I will confess, this is the one Zombie flick that features army stuff that I actually really liked.  It’s no academy award winner by any stretch, but it’s mighty entertaining.  Nick Cannon, Mena Suvari and Ving Rhames star in this horror film based on the George A. Romero classic zombie film. A mysterious virus has infected the small town of Leadville, Colorado, and the military is brought in to enforce a quarantine and stop the spread of the disease. As people perish, survivors realize that the virus is creating the walking dead who crave human flesh. Only a small number of people are immune to the virus, and those few survivors must battle to fend off the infected zombies while trying to make it out of town alive. Great gory fun!

#7… The Ruins
I went into this film with “0” expectations and found myself surprisingly entertained.  Populated by the most insufferable and annoying 20-somethings you could possibly imagine, you actually begin to care for each one of the characters as their doom seems rather inescapable.  Sufficiently creepy to make you keep your feet on the couch, and rather believable in its decent into madness plot line!  Read the book by Scott Smith or watch the movie, but either way, you ought to check this one out!

#8… Fangland
Trust me – this one is Vampires with (at last) a new twist!  Written by John Marks, Fangland has to be read to be believed.  Anything else I tell you here would only spoil the fun and surprises the book holds in store!

#9… Monster Quest
Finally on DVD, this fantastic series is a must for all of you who have ever wondered about the truth behind stuff like Big Foot, Giant Squids, Werewolves, and Sea Monsters!  The series is intelligent and unbiased, and is guaranteed to keep you entertained and actually maybe even teach you something new.  But don’t expect proof beyond a doubt of the existence of the show’s elusive creatures of the week – that sort of thing would make headline news before ending up on a show put together by the History channel!  Still, well worth shelling out for the complete first season!

#10… The Big Penis Book
Okay – so the Big Penis Book isn’t so much about Halloween, but trust me when I tell you it’s DEFINITELY about monsters! Monster cocks, that is.  In The Big Penis Book we explore the centuries-old fascination with the large phallus, a fascination common to men and women alike. This hefty book is profusely illustrated with over 400 historic photos of spectacular male endowments, including rare photos of the legendary John Holmes. The majority of the photographs are from the 1970s, when the sexual revolution first freed photographers to depict the male entirely nude. Photographers include Bob Mizer of Athletic Model Guild, David Hurles of Old Reliable, Colt, Falcon, Sierra Domino, Third World, and Champion Studios, with each of these iconic photographers interviewed or profiled, along with information about each of their models. The Big Penis Book is written and compiled by Dian Hanson and published by Taschen.

So there you are, dear friends – my top 10 Halloween Treats of 2008!  If you get around to sampling any of them ( or if you already have) do let me know what you think!  You know me!  I love discussing this stuff!

Happy Halloween!
Hugz + Kisses,
Patrick XOXO
