BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #93 – It’s a mad, MAD world!

My Mum always says “No news is good news”! HA! HA! HA! I guess I’ve learned that that is sort of synonymous to the old “glass half full” saying in that it is a positive way of looking at things.

Blogging comes in waves for me, as I am sure many of you have noticed. I’m not exactly regular with it, but when I get going, I can usually Blog up a storm. The thing is that I recently decided to focus on my current projects at Class Comics, which has meant, sadly, that I have had to forego other stuff, like email and Blogging. Not doing both of those can tend to get people a bit worried about whether you’re still alive or not!

It has all been for the greater good though because I now feel like I am extremely close to the end of Zahn #1, with only 5 pages left to draw and ink. Of course, when I am done, the colorists’ work kicks in… but for the first time I can see the completion of this book is close at hand, and that is a great feeling since it seems that everyone else at Class Comics but me has put comics out lately.

I know, I know, I put out Satisfaction Guaranteed #4 in January this year, but that feels like eons ago! I confess I still sometimes struggle with balancing the creative and administrative aspects of co-running Class Comics. I guess I am constantly learning, and that counts for something.

In other news, I’ve also been hard at work on redesigning my website. The problem with the current incarnation is that it’s a HOG and takes an eternity to load properly. Plus it’s old and out of date. Fraz and I recently decided that it was time to get that puppy sorted out and do a whole new version of it. That’s easier said than done, and yours truly had a creative shit-fit this week. For some reason I could not come up with anything that made me go “wow”! And if I don’t go “wow”, how can my fans?! SO I took a break from the website for a few days and returned to it with a fresh perspective and a desire to give it another go.

I’m happy to report that it worked, and now Fraz and I are hard at work putting all of that together. I’ll be sure to let you all know when “The Art of Patrick Fillion – Version 5.0” is live and ready to be explored!

It’s been a hectic week in general – in a good way, mind you. Aside from all the above mentioned stuff, I’ve been up to a bunch of other things. As you know Fraz and I attended the Word on the Street Festival last Sunday. That was a great experience and I had a blast getting to meet some of you local Vancouver-based readers. You were all so sweet to us, and we really appreciate you taking the time to come out in the POURING RAIN! Blargh! Despite the deluge and the cold, it was great to just be out there and get a chance to meet you folks. I must say, Fraz and I are jazzed for next years’ San Diego Con! We look forward to meeting more of you guys there too!

I also thought I would say thanks to all of you who ordered your new “Bliss” art books through the Class Comics site. I’ve been personally signing them for ya, and I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the book.

All of this I’ve been doing to the tune of Annie Lennox’s latest album, “Songs of Mass Destruction”. A truly beautiful album, I love almost every song on the record, with my fave track being “Coloured Bedspread”. Oh please, please won’t some DJ out there remix this baby for the dance clubs the way Dave Audé did with “Wonderful” from Annie’s last album, “Bare”. “Coloured Bedspread” isn’t likely to be an official single, but it’s a wonderfully crafted track, with a sort of “Confessions on a Dancefloor” flavor that you just can’t help but love!

Fraz and I did find time to see Resident Evil: Extinction and we both loved it! Freakin’ critics giving it such crap reviews! Were they expecting Oscar material?!? I mean really! It’s a popcorn flick and NO, it doesn’t star Meryl Streep! Oy! (although THAT’s a funny visual – can you i
magine Meryl Streep (LOVE HER!) kicking the shit out of a horde of Zombies?! HA! HA! HA! ) Great fun though, and if you enjoyed the first 2 films, you should be very pleased with this third one, rumored to be the final in the franchise. :(

Been giving the Bionic Woman a chance, after her less than stellar pilot — way too much stuff was crammed into that dark and brooding hour long episode!. All I can say is THANK GOD for the AMAZING Katee Sackhoff as the first, deliciously evil Bionic Woman. I must say, episode 2 was already a vast improvement over the pilot. So hopefully things will keep getting better. Michelle Ryan is not quite bionic just yet in my opinion, but she has a lot of potential. Lovely girl!

Lately I’ve been going to bed with David Wellington’s “Monster Nation” – not quite as satisfying as “Monster Island”, “Nation” relies far too much on the bloody army and their gadgets to move it’s plot along. Personally, the minute authors involve the army in their Zombie stories, I glaze over and lose interest, so I have put “Nation” down for the time being and have taken to reading Michael Allred’s WONDERFUL Madman Volume 1, recently released by Image Comics. I’ve always loved Madman because he has always reminded me of Ghostboy – similar costumes I guess. Anyhow, I’m loving it. It’s so quirky and in many ways, very real. Plus Mr. Allred’s announced that a Madman film is officially in pre-production. YAY!

Being so inspired, I whipped up this quick little Madman fan art. It literally took about an hour and a half to complete. I figured it would be quick given the simple coloring… but it was tons of fun and I hope you like it… and check out the variants. I thought about making it naughtier, but decided to just accentuate his assets instead of baring them! A boy has to leave a few things to the imagination, n’est-ce pas?

So all is well that continues well! Fall is my favorite season. It’s beautiful and very inspiring… plus it brings Halloween and pumpkin pie which I ADORE! LOL!

I hope you are all doing well in your necks of the woods, my friends. And hey, if you’re Canadian, Happy Thanksgiving weekend!

Hugz + Kisses,
Patrick XOXOX

Nice fan art, Patrick. We like the white-with-red version best, & agree that the huge bulge is exciting even if covered. He does look like Ghost Boy, which makes him extra hot. Good work! Thanks for sharing.

Your blogging behavior is not unusual, I myself struggle with blogging regularly when my mind is occupied with the daily businesses.

And one must certainly leave something to the imagination, it’s the reason I love you art.
