BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #46 – Why I love the Art of Steven!

There are a great many amazing artists out there who are not as present on the internet as they deserve to be. For whatever reason, they do not have an official website. I am always a bit concerned that their beautiful work does not benefit from the kind of exposure that the internet can bring.

Just because someone does not have an official website does not mean that their work is not worth talking about. Obviously, one of my biggest reasons for doing this Blog is to discuss as much of the talent I appreciate as possible. I just don’t always have as many links to share as I would like.

The artist that goes by the name of Steven is an artist whose work I have admired for years, but have never managed to find an official website for. I first discovered his amazing artwork in the pages of All-Man magazine some years back, and immediately his brilliant talent struck me. His lines are always so crisp and clear, and it is wonderful to behold how efficiently he creates his hyper-sensual imagery using very few lines.

Clearly, each line he employs is incredibly precise, and every stroke works in tandem with the next to form incredibly beautiful, artful and modern depictions of some of the most beautiful Boytoons you have ever seen. And his Boytoons are beautiful. Mostly always clean shaven and smooth, you just want to reach out and lick them all over! I have always especially loved his little touches, like the white tan-lined bums!

Steven is perhaps best known (at least to the best of my knowledge) for the work he has done for adult gay magazines, such as Freshmen and All-Man. His pen and ink work is exquisite, but no less impressive are his paintings. I was floored the first time I saw one. Being an artist who cannot paint on canvas to save his life, I always admire someone who can so effortlessly make the transition between ink to oils.

I’ve selected a small sampling of some of my favorite Steven pieces. I’ve only ever managed to find a few on the internet, most of them reposted without proper credit to the artist (I freaking hate that!) I really wanted to share this man’s work with all of you because I find he has a truly unique style, and one that is very graphically pleasing. He accomplishes so much beauty with so few lines, and I admire this in him to no end.

Some years back, I had the opportunity to speak with him over the telephone. My awesome then editor-in-chief at All-Man was kind enough to pass along his contact info. Steven is a very charming man, and very soft spoken. He struck me as someone who is very passionate about his work, and very respectful of other artists. It was a pleasure to converse with him.

I have since lost touch with him, much to my chagrin. Maybe someday our paths will cross again. I certainly adore his work and would love having him do some work for Class Comics. This was discussed back then, and his interest suggested that someday this might actually happen.

So if any of you have more info on this brilliant fellow, please do let me know. A talent like this should definitely be appreciated. And if we’re really lucky, we will see an official Steven website appear at some point in the near future.

  1. I think it was Steven who did this Gay coloring book a few years back that was really hot here in NYC (hot in both ways– as in, flew off the shelves really quickly AND sexually arousing!)

I also see his illustrations on products marketed toward gay men here and there.

I really appreciate his clean, precise style but had no idea that painting was his too! I’ve had that image on my computer forever and never put 2 and 2 together. Like u said, that’s really impressive how he can so effortlessly switch media like that. Makes me wana pick up a paintbrush.

  2. Also, thanks for the kudos on my DS and He-Man pics, man! ^___^

  3. Hiya JC…

Great to hear from ya, dude! Glad you enjoyed the Steven post, and that I could shed some light on the artist behind that totally HOT painting! ;) I always felt it looked a lot like the porn star, Derek Cameron. I wonder if that was deliberate?

I had never heard of the gay Coloring Book project. It sounds TOTALLY WICKED!!! No wonder they flew off the shelves. Steven is really a terrific artist, and I can easily see his style lending itself very nicely to such a project! Did you manage to get one?

And you’re totally welcome on the kudos, my friend! Your stuff is sooooo hot, and you know how much I love it! I hunger for more! LOL!!!

    Hugz + kisses my friend!

  4. Hello Young Jedi!

Again Patrick, your eye for great art serves you well.

I have never heard of Steven before or seen any of his work. Though these days it doesn’t surprise me as to why some artists don’t have websites, the reasons I can think of are either they put what money they have into perfecting and creating their art or maybe because it’s of rip off’s who steal other people’s art, manipulate it and claim it as their own, bearing in mind these are just conclusions that I have come to in my head and not taken as factual. The reasons behind this could be far of the points that I have mentioned.

Back to Steven: His work is very vibrant, that’s the word that came to mind when I saw his pictures. His fun and somewhat comical, I mean what would you do with a drunken sailor?? Hello – that’s pretty obvious, take advantage of him and watch the expression on his face when he wakes up the next morning with lube in his bum crack and a twenty dollar note in the palm of his hand!!

Again you can tell he is passionate about his art as it comes through in his works, it’s great to be introduced to an artist you have never seen or heard of before. I hope that you will show more of his work later on.

As for me going “Insane” – sometimes in my carrer a situation comes up that pushes me to tap into every resource I have accsess to, I have been working for 19 hours a day since last thursday and I’m very tired, it is now tuesday in Sydney and still no light at the end of the tunnel. When all of this is over, I may just become a Hare Krishna and go into retreat and seranade lentil plants naked underneath a full moon.

    Big Hugz!

    Manny!

  5. Oooooh, thanks for this heads up patrick, I really like this guy.

On another subject, where would I send fanart of your boytoons to?

My friend and I are collaborating on a pic for you, but Im not sure what to do with it once ive finished the colours. :D

  6. I’ve seen his work in a few magazines, and on the net, I like both his paintings and mag illos, not just for their clean lines, but for how hot they are.
I’m on a couple yahoo groups that post his stuff regularly, mainly new magazine illustratiobns for fiction. I’m glad to have that as a source.

  7. Charlie MJR says

I’ve seen Steven a few times online, his work sort of reminds me in some way of Tom of Finlands. Its crisp and colourful.

As JC said, I’m sure he did a colouring book, I may have seen it in Prowler in london at one point.

We live at a point in history that several years ago we couldn’t have shown our appreciation to such wonderful erotic male artists as you Patrick or Steven or Joe Phillips.
Lets just hope someone comes across him on the net, then convince him to do some more of his great art.

  8. Damian & Trent says

Steven’s guys are cool. And hot. We hope he reads this, to see how much he’s appreciated. Thanks for honoring him, by having him here.

  10. Hiya Gang…

Great to hear from ya! I’m glad I could share a little of Steven’s work with you guys! I have loved it ever since I laid eyes on it.

Manny… You are very correct that there is a great deal of humor and playfulness to the works of Steven. I think this is what makes his stuff so sexy. I do plan on showing a bit more of his stuff at some later date. Maybe when I do a “pretty pictures 3” I’ll have a few more pieces to share.

Gavin… Wonderful to hear from you! I’m thrilled you enjoyed the post on Steven! His work is sooooo pretty! ;)

Meanwhile, I would LOVE to see what you and your pal are whipping up for me! :D You can email it to class@telus.net and title your message FAN ART. Or if it’s a hard copy, you can mail it to the following address:

All that to say that I am DYING to see what you have done! I am a SUCKER for fan art! Looking forward to it, my friend! :o)

Charvolth… thanks for the comment, my friend! Certain Yahoo Groups are very respectful of artists and their works. There are a lot of really great communities out there that enjoy sharing the works of their favorite artists. It is sometimes a great way to see work by artists who do not otherwise have a big presence on the internet.

Charlie… Glad you enjoyed the look at Steven’s fantastic work! There really is something classic about his stuff. And I agree with you! It is sooooo cool that we live in a time where we can share our love of work such as this together. Erotic Art is a very valid form of art, and it should be appreciated by as many folks as possible! Thanks for stopping by!

Damian and Trent… Hello Boys! You are most welcome. Talking about an artist like Steven is a real pleasure, because he is not only crazy talented, but he is a real sweetheart as well. It was really fun putting this post together and I am really pleased you enjoyed it so much! Take care! :o)

Ismael… Welcome back my dear friend! I have missed you! LOL!!! I hope you had a great vacation and that you are nice and rested! I can’t wait to see the image of Jeanne Darque you are working on as well as the others you have planned!

By the way, thanks so much for the kind words on my album! Glad you enjoyed it! :o) Thanks again for the heads up, my friend! Much love! XOXO

And much love to all of you!
