BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #38 – On the Road Again: Discoveries in La Belle Province!!!

My dear friends…

I have missed you!!! I hope this posting finds you all well and that this past week has been filled with lots of fun! I hope those of you who attended the San Diego Comic Con had a great time and that you will be sharing lots of great pics with me… poor little me who did not get to attend once again! I swear I will get there next Summer even if I have to start walking in January! LOL!!!

So as you know, I am still on vacation… but I was able to get access to the internet today and prepare a little something for you all. I am on my trusty laptop whom Fraser and I have affectionately named “Orko” and thought it would be nice to say hello!

To be honest, I am itching to get back home and to my studio. Isn’t that funny? It seems so to me, especially after bitching that I desperately needed to take time off. Well the time off has been taken, and this in the form of a family vacation (My Mum and Dad, Brother, Sister-In-Law and Niece, Fraser and I attended a HUGE family reunion together.)… which in the end has been wonderful fun but not terribly restful. At least it has allowed me to get away from work for a few days, which has helped me to refocus my energy and look forward to getting back to the drawing board. I feel creative anew and filled with hot new ideas that I cannot wait to commit to paper! WATCH OUT WORLD! HA! HA! HA!

So after spending a week in La Belle Province of Quebec, (and for those of you who have never been there, you really MUST make a point of going someday! There really is nothing like Le Vieux Quebec (Old Quebec) and the beauty of La Gaspesie with its endless little fishing towns, breathtaking sunsets and amazing rocky beaches and shorelines. Trust me! Photos can never do this wonderful province justice! Check out my Honey in front of the Vieux Quebec architecture, and the beautiful Chateau Frontenac!) Fraser and I are now spending time with his side of the family in the province of Ontario.

Whenever I am in Quebec, I have 2 very important things I like to shop for: #1 French Music… because it is almost impossible to get in British Columbia where I live, and #2 French comics.

There are a lot of differences between European comics and North American comics, not the least of which is the format. European Comics tend to be hard cover tomes usually exquisitely printed on high quality, glossy paper, resulting in a gorgeous presentation that serves to wet your appetite. What I hate most about hunting for these books however is that, living in Vancouver, I am not exposed to these often enough to really know all that is available and what is out there. So I rely on my eyes and fingers to sift through the endless shelves of these gorgeous volumes while in Quebec, in the hopes that I will happen upon something of interest.

It just so happens that this time around, I did. Obviously, being a gay comic artist myself, I can appreciate most books where the male characters are lovingly depicted and don’t mind showing a bit of skin. This isn’t my only reason for purchasing a volume, but it helps! On this trip, I discovered a book called Néféritès, which is about an ancient Egyptian embalmer named Néféritès who must uncover the secret behind several strange killings. Néféritès and his sexy assistant run into some pretty dangerous situations as they begin to unravel the strange mystery revolving around these deaths. The art is, quite simply, out of this world. Leave it to the French to go that extra mile and to pull out all the stops. Now I must confess that I have not yet had the opportunity to read through the entire thing, but such is my excitement about it that I had to share this find with you.

Take a look at some of the images from the first book, which is volume 1 of 3. Written by Patrick Galliano and Sylviane Corgiat, the series is illustrated by artist Chris Cross. Naturally, I dug around for the next two volumes, and happened into another store where would you believe it, Fraser and I met with the Canadian distributor of these fine comics, in town on business from France. The fellow told us that this was a relatively new line of books that was just starting to emerge, and that the next two volumes were not yet available for purchase. So it looks like I will have to Amazon the next two. Not quite as fun as buying them whilst vacationing in Quebec, but at least it will satisfy my curiosity and need to know the rest of the story.

As you all know, I am a HUGE fan of ancient Egypt, and even Naked Justice is deeply rooted in Egyptian magic. This comic series was not only a great find because of it’s sheer beauty, hot half naked men and exciting script, but also because it has served to nourish my imagination, and inspired me to delve even deeper into NJ’s Egyptian roots.

I just LOVE making a find of this kind.

Now as far as I know, Néféritès is only available in French for the time being, but Les Humanoïdes Associés, the brilliant company that puts the series out, seems to be releasing a whack of other great titles that I am willing to bet will eventually be translated into English and made available for mass market distribution. Their line of titles seems to constantly be growing, and from what I can tell, they are a unique cross between a European and North American-style comic company, mixing the best of both worlds making them a cutting edge publis
her of high quality books.

All of this to say, that I have missed you all, very much! I was quite touched when I read the BAZILLION comments on my last posting before taking off. It is so nice to know that I am missed and appreciated. You guys really are the best and I too am looking forward to resuming with the Blogging once I get back home. I won’t get to answer every single comment individually, but suffice it to say that I appreciate all the kind words that were said and the constant support you all give me.

I will try to post a few more things before coming home. Meanwhile, thanks for everything you guys. Have a wicked week and we’ll chat when I get back!

BIG, BIG, BIG Hugz + Kisses

PS — If I seem a bit pink on the cover of today’s issue, please do not be alarmed. I caught a nasty sunburn while in Quebec, which has since turned into a lovely shade of tan! Ahhhh! :o) Much love to you all, my friends!

  1. Hey Patrick!

You look fantastic and so well rested, I hope you and Fraz had such a good time, there is so much to tell you but I am sure that you have a million things to do, so we can do it over time.

And you can be truthful with us, you love being pink, you wish you were the color pink all the time!!

Me and some of the other bloggers, have been using your last posting as a message board, it seems we have all been at a loose end over the past 2 weeks LOL, so I must apologise for all the postings on there. To be honest I was about to put another on there asking if anyone had a good recepie for meatloaf.

So how are my favorite 3 powder puffs????

GAWD! I wish I was there to give you all a rib cracking hug!

  2. Good to hear you are having a good vacation, Patrick! Awesome find on that comic book– I’ll have to try and check it out!

Glad to hear that you’re having a good vacation. I may actually get to Montreal myself, this year for a friend’s bachelor party, or ‘Vegas, it’s still up in the air.

The comic featuring the misadventures of the Egyptian embalmer looks quite good. Sadly I rarely get european comics anymore, not since I stopped reading 2000 A.D.

Hopefully you won’t need a vacation to recover from your vacation, have fun.

  4. Hey Patrick!

When you get a chance check out:

These are the people that hold comic book conventions in Australia, it seems they have a great line so far for this years convention and you know who, will be there with his camera and credit card!

  6. YEEE-HAWW!!! He’s back… well… kinda…

Thanks for posting, Patrick, it’s awesome to hear that You have such a nice family-vacation and that You got a tan as well! :D
Man, You won’t believe me, but it’s true: I do NOT check this blog because I always leave the site opened and just refresh it every 30 minutes or so in order to see whether or not You posted something new…

    Yeah, I’m such a nerd… ;)
    Uh-Ah, manny’s here…

  8. In Feb/Mar I often visited the Album stores in Paris ( and was drooling over the range of high quality comic books available. Unfortunately my French wasn’t really good enough to take advantage, so I just got a few old Valerian books and some of Maester’s hilarious “Soeur Marie-Thérèse des Batignolles” to work on slowly.

The staff at Album were really cool too – and they used to love having my dog visit.

Oh My God, Its so great to hear from you Patrick, it sounds like your having a great time on holiday.

Aww, it must be great to see your family all together, you’ve said once before how your mom knows about your company, must be great having a son who’s achieved what he wants most in life.

Its nice Fraser getting to see his family too, how lovely for you both.

I imagine it does get rather stressful when your working all the time, but having a mental rest will just heal your mind as well as body, making your revived for new ideas.

That Neferites, thats intresting, for some reason it put me in mind of Six Feet Under, seems a lot of guys are going into the embolling thing these days, lol.

Oh I’m so sorry to hear you got sunburned, a little to much sun… I got burned when I went to london Pride, it stung for days after, luckily its healed up now.

So great to hear from you Patrick, I think a lot of us began to worry, just you and Fraser enjoy the rest of your holiday.

  10. Hallo Patrick!

So good to hear from you again! Good to hear all is going well with you. I really want to go to Quebec some day. Maybe in a few years. I will be going to South Africa next year to see the friends and family again. I have to own up that I never had a great interest in anything Egypt. I did however study ancient egyptian art in school and although I did find it very interesting, if the subjects were as sexy as those from Néféritès I might have payed a bit more attention in class.

Take care and enjoy your time.

    Miss you!

PS: Love the Boytoons Mag cover!

Nice posting, and also sooo glad that Nightcharm gave such a glowing review of NJ!! It’s only natural though that they should recognize your work!! Glad to hear you had a great vacation as well!! Also happy that you had a chance to drop us all a line, a la’ Orko *too funny*. I’m a huge fan of Egypt as well, so I am very impressed with the posting. Can’t wait to see what you have next.

  13. Hey Gene Gray!

I was tring to have a look at your blog Absinthestudio but can’t seem to find it :(

I wanna have a perve, I wanna have a perve!

Thanks Mike, wow, if there was one way to be buried, that would be it.

Actully, in a very morbid thought, perhaps if I was cremated, my dream would be to be thrown off a cliff edge, only to blow back all over a shirtless Hugh Jackman or Collin Farrell, heehee.

  15. When I drop dead, I want to come back as the nastiest poltergiest’s I possibally could – heaven forbid anyone with a messy bathroom!LOL

  16. Hello my beautiful, wonderful, patient friends…

I have missed ALL of you a great deal as well! SMMMMMMMMOOOOOOOCH!

So glad I got to post from the road, at least once. I really had very little access to the internet, and I found I was in total withdrawal! LOL!!! Isn’t it amazing how addicted we are to the Internet? Well, suffice it to say that it was a real pleasure to say hello to all of you while on my trip!

I really loved reading your comments upon getting back! Glad you all find that the Néféritès comic looks fun! I am DYIING to see the next chapter. I sure hope they release it soon! I will of course keep you posted on all of that! :o)

Tee Hee Hee – It was cool to read you all liked the name of my laptop; Orko! HA! HA! HA! The minute we bought him, Fraser and I just knew that was what he would be called. We’re kind of funny about naming our inanimate things. We named our little Gold Echo “Timmy”, after Timmy from South Park! When we zoom up a hill or pass a big truck or something, we both yell “TIMMMMMMMAAAAAAHHHHHH”… HA! HA! HA! We are both pretty silly I suppose…but it keeps us young! LOL!!!

Anyhow, I should run as I still have like, a BAZILLION things to catch up on… but I just wanted to say a great big thank you to all of you and a HUGE HELLO! ? I will have some cool goodies for you shortly, dear friends… once I catch my breath, that is! HA! HA! HA!

Oh and thanks for the cool links, Mike… I can’t wait to check them all out!

    Much love to you all!
    Patrick XOXOXOX
