BOYTOONS MAGAZINE #20 – Beautiful – The Art of Ismael Alvarez.

You all knew this issue would come sooner or later since I have never been shy about my love affair with the beautiful art of Ismael Alvarez. The truth is that I was holding out for his GORGEOUS rendition of my lean, green sex machine, Locus in order to feature him on the cover.

You’ve all seen his beautiful art on the internet, and his boys have become a massive hit amongst collectors and connoisseurs of Gay erotica. The lavish beauty he infuses into each of his illustrations is quite simply breathtaking. I find that there is a delicious sensuality present in Ismael’s work that one does not find often. This could be due to the artists’ warm Spanish blood and his own natural sensuality as a person. But the fact is that Ismael is a tremendous talent and one that has taken great pains to understand and discover each aspect of his craft completely and fully.

Ismael and I first came into contact in the late 1990’s. We became fast friends, and have always had a mutual respect and admiration for one another, both as artists and people. Of late, Ismael has done a good deal of work for Fraser and I at Class Comics. I don’t think I need to remind anyone of “Paying your dues”, the Sethan and Naked Justice story he illustrated for Rapture #1. It was a huge hit with fans and with good reason. Ismael embraces his sexuality completely, and does not shy away from depicting it as a beautiful and natural act.

His own website is a wonderful testament to his views on sex and sexuality. Playful, sensual and incredibly erotic, his work is always a pure joy to view. His men are beautiful and sometimes delicate, yet masculine and empowered all at once. The skill with which each image is created is even more apparent when you stop to savor each and every one to the fullest.

His work is also extremely effective because it can be so realistic. There are moments when I have had to look twice at an illustration because it seems to be looking back at me. It is that perfect blend of illustration and photo-realism that Ismael’s work achieves that makes it so haunting. You can actually imagine these Heavenly creatures bursting through you computer screen and making love to you.

Ismael is perhaps one of the few “Pop star” artists out there. By that I mean that he himself is “larger than life”. He is out there, in the best sense of the word. His Blog is as much about himself as it is about his work. This adds a great sense of “pop stardom” to his work, which I just LOVE, but in no way does this make his work without merit on its own. His art is brilliant, pure and simple. His men and women are ultimate examples of the beauty that is the human (or in Locus’ case, Sektan) form.

Currently, Ismael is hard at work creating more beautiful renditions of the Class Comics characters for up-coming books. His plate is full of several other projects for Gay publications and websites. One thing is certain, this fantastic artist is in high demand. You have but to peruse his fantastic portfolio to understand why.

I’ve enjoyed ismael’s work for a while and enjoy his renditions of your characters and his own work. Though my favorite work by him that I’ve seen were his comics, he has a great sense of humor in them.
I think he did a good job with the Locus Illo, though I prefer your softer approach on the facial structure, still its a great picture.

  2. Hey Patrick!

I was wondering when you were going to blog Ismael. He really is fantastic and is very realistic about his work as well.

I haven’t seen any of his comics though, just what is on his website and the Class Comics website.

He has adone an incredible job on Locus, but as Charvolth mentioned you do have a softer approach with his facial structure, but what I see that in Ismael’s rendition is a side to Locus that expresses, “I can give as good as I get.” I for one don’t think I want to get on his bad side.

I really enjoy Ismael’s work, his passion shows in his illustartions.

Great posting and thanks for giving us a glimpse into the friendship you have with him.

    Manny!

  4. Hi Charvolth, Manny and Ismael…

Glad you liked the post on Ismi! :o)

I personally have always loved seeing how other artists interpret my characters, and how they use their own unique styles to depict them. I know that some fans have found it to be a little jarring in the past, but I guess it is all a matter of personal taste. I truly respect your opinions and am always thrilled to read them.

Ismi, I am really glad you liked the little article. Much love to you, dear friend! :o)

And much love and thanks to you all!
    Patrick XOXOXO

  5. Good morning Patrick,

what can I say that hasn’t already been said: Ismaels work is just unbelievably beautiful. There’s incredible technique BUT also there’s so much emotion and I see so much love in every work that I know of him.

Take the Cam-picture that You uploaded here onto Your blog for example: Cams body is – of course – just perfectly drawn and supremely beautiful. But it’s the look in his eyes which make this picture even more perfect from my point of view. Cam looks like he is in heat and is looking for a “prey” to mount him. Wouldn’t mind being the top hahahaha =D

Honestly, Ismaels work is just awesome and I thank You for exposing his beautiful art on Your blog.

  6. Hiya Phrog…

Happy to see you enjoyed the Ismi post. I love his artwork too and can’t stop gushing over it…ahm, I mean about it! HA! HA! HA!

    Hugz + Kisses
    Patrick XOXO
